The Indian Premier League (IPL) gained popularity over the years and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organized a match with the women's team in 2018, while 4 matches were played in 2019 and 2020. Women's IPL (WIPL). One of the agenda at the GC meeting on Friday was the proposal for a six-team women's IPL by the board. It looks like the full women's tournament will start in 2023. The board has also cleared the way for IPL media rights with the ITT (Invitation for Tender) to be released on Monday.
The BCCI was planning to hold the Women's IPL but the discussions got delayed due to the pandemic. But now the board has given green signal to conduct the tournament from next year. Exhibition matches will be held again this year. Women's matches could not be staged in 2021 due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Several women cricketers have supported the idea of holding a full-fledged IPL and the league is likely to start next year. This tournament will be of six teams.
The England Cricket Board and Cricket Australia have a full-fledged league for women cricketers. Indian women cricketers have been a part of CA's Women's Big Bash League and ECB's The Hundred.
“The full women's IPL has to be approved by the AGM. We hope to start it by next year,” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told media after the IPL GC meeting in Mumbai on Friday.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has finally given the green light to float the IPL Media Rights Tender. As reported by InsideSport, the BCCI was ready to release the IPL media rights. The decision came five months late and the Indian board announced that it would float the IPL media rights tender by October 25, but kept delaying the process. Now ITT will release on Monday.
